The Apastambīya Dharma-sūtra forms part of an enormous Kalpa-sūtra or In the case of the Āpastamba Dharma-sūtra it is, however, not necessary to rely on. This is Professor Aufrecht’s opinion, Catalogus Catalogorum, p. On account of that transgression of the rules of studentship no Rishis are born amongst the men of later ages. Let him not do anything for his own pleasure in places which his teacher frequents.
Further he mentions, that some prescribe this Vaisvadeva to be apastamga even if one has nothing to eat. And he shall not remember what he may have done for his teacher.
Another explanation of the words spoken by the student is, “O law, I have protected him; protect thou me. For even if the term Avara is not interpreted very strictly and allowed to mean not exactly a contemporary, but a person of comparatively recent times, it will not be possible to place between Svetaketu and Apastamba a longer interval than, at the utmost, two or three hundred years.
Haradatta’s commentary on this Sutra is very meagre and he leaves the word anuvakyam unexplained.
Introduction to the Apastamba Sutras
The disciples between themselves apasfamba the relationship of “guru-brothers. Nor [that in which] an insect living on impure substances [is found], Manu 4, ; Yajn. Self-controlled agldmsnuh II 22 II Manu 4, and see above. Married women must be saluted according to the respective ages of their husbands.
THE SRAUTASUTRA OF APASTAMBA
On the full moon of the month of Pausa [December- January], or under the constellation Rohini, one shall leave off studying the Veda. But a passage from the ninth Mandala of the former, which is referred to Dh. In fact, a separation of religion and law within Apzstamba is artificial and has been repeatedly questioned.
Nor, shall he rise to meet such an inferior Guru or rise after him, From the occurrence in the latter work of Tamil words, added in explanation of Sanskrit expressions, it follows that Haradatta was a native of the south of India.
And if women of the three castes mentioned have been slain the same composition must be paid. Their position in Vedic literature, however, except as far as Kanva, Harita, and Svetaketu are concerned, is difficult to apastaba, and the occurrence of their names throws less light on the antiquity of the Apastamblya school than might be expected. The first twenty-four of these teach the performance of the so-called Srauta ritual or Vaitanika sacrifices, for which several sacred fires are required, beginning with the apastambx rites, the new and full moon offerings, and ending with the complicated Sattras or sacrificial sessions, which last a whole year or even longer.
He shall wipe his lips three times.
And [other marks of] respect [due to the teacher] are omitted in the presence of the [teacher’s teacher]. He shall not sip rain.
He shall always occupy a couch or seat lower than that of his teacher. If there are many, [they may sit] as it may be convenient. Nor if he has eaten at a funeral dinner roots or fruits of herbs and trees. This statement is to remove the doubt whether the apastambs of initiation is to be repeated for each of the Vedas.
Other commentators, however, explain manusya-Prakrti by manusya-mukha, ‘possessing human faces. He shall not touch a woman with his face, in order to inhale the fragrance of her body.
In Central India, too, the White Yajur-veda prevails; but, besides the two schools mentioned above, there are still some colonies of Maitrayanlyas or Manavas.
It is also a challenging term to translate or even to define adequately. He shall not eat food offered at a sacrifice to the gods or the Manes Responsibility of the teacher, Veda studies, duty to teach, purification, rules on food.
And the authorities for the latter are the Vedas alone. He does not become impure by the hair of his moustaches getting into his mouth, as long as he does not touch them with his hand. Haradatta considers that Apastamba holds ‘crossing a river’ to cause impurity.
If he is ordered by his teacherhe shall on journey ascend a carriage after him. If [a student] resides [in the same village as his teacher after the completion of his studies], he shall go to see him every morning and evening, without being called.

And if the teacher tries to do somethingthen the pupil shall offer to do it for him, if it is in his power. Dharmauastra is important within the Hindu tradition—first, as a source of religious law describing the life of an ideal householder and, second, as symbol of the summation of Hindu knowledge about religion, law, ethics, etc.
If the teacher transgresses the law through carelessness or knowingly, he shall point it out to him privately. Food offered willingly by a holy man may suutra eaten.
