BOOK REVIEW: The Shadowfell Trilogy by Juliet Marillier
shadowfelk THAT’s when I truly lose it completely. Even the Good Folk, who are mysterious creatures, were wonderful to read about and I was thoroughly immersed in the many tales they told, shadowffell history, the slow uncovering of their importance to the story, and the many gifts they possessed.
She made the decision long ago to live life, something that is much harder than it sounds in the bleak world that Keldec has made of Alba. On the run for much of her life, seeing atrocities that would break others, Neryn let all of that strengthen her resolve. These are not your lifeless women pulled along by the plot or squashed down by the presence of men.
May 16, Katie Stewart rated it it was amazing. Her worldbuilding might be a bit stock, generic medieval fantasy, and the plot a bit too linear but her writing makes up for all of that. You may enjoy an interview I did with Juliet Marillier a couple of years ago That said, I’d still highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good fantasy.
In fact, it was the first book in a long time that totally kept my attention to the point of neglecting other things I whadowfell have been doing, like sleeping.
Neither one of them had an upbringing that endears them to easily trusting others. This was my first Juliet Marillier book, but it will not be my last.

I completely loved this version of fae and, like I said before, I easily became addicted to these characters and this world.
I love, love, loved it!
Instant attraction gets old. She’s brave and incredibly strong, yet thoughtful with a heart so big it could encompass the world and you just feel yourself wanting to be close to her so you can catch just a piece of her awesomeness. In fact, I just flew by those portions. For Neryn is a girl who possesses the ability to bring down the evil king Keldec and finally bring freedom to her people and the Good Folk of Alban.
View all 6 comments. A good julite, deftly narrated, with Juliet Marillier’s special writing. I think most will feel the start is slow, but I find this an eminently easy read that’s comfortable and enveloping to step into. A young man, Flint, helps her escape the soldiers, but his past is shadowed with mystery and Neryn must choose whether it is safe to trust him.

It’s essentially a historical fantasy setting in this julliet loosely based on a magical ancient Scotland with lush world-building and marillieg strong either of magic, character or body and often quite young, female main character, and usually has a slow-forming but very sweet romance.

As for Alban, Marillier really created a magical and fascinating country. Neryn aside, Shadowfell was a remarkable novel. Elaine and Rachel March But this gift puts Neryn in peril, for her world is ruled by a usurper-king who fears and despises any magic.
